August 2008: the bonsai is continually refined throughout the year by allowing strong growth throughout the Spring to help develop the taper of the branches, and then pruned hard at midsummer and late July to increase the ramification of the tertiary (outer) branches and twigs. In the images above, the bonsai can be seen from the right hand side and it is possible to see how the tree is developed to gently lean forwards to create a sense that it is towering over the viewer.

June 2012: 3 years of strong growth had left the Hawthorn looking very overgrown by the Summer of 2012 and so I defoliated the tree to enable me to work on the branches, pruning and then wiring the entire branch structure.

At the same time I addressed two scars low down on the trunk resulting from the removal of roots when the tree was collected in 2004, 8 years previously. Both scars were hollowed out (or turned into 'uro'). As the two scars were almost level with each other I had to ensure that they did not look too symmetrical; one I carved downwards slightly, the other I carved upwards.
